The patchwork of forest closures and my continuing The patchwork of forest closures and my continuing quest to put more and more miles in the saddle have resulted in revisiting some trails that I haven't ridden in recent memory. From piecing together urban trails to get across town to seeking out singletrack that used to be a staple of my long rides, it has been a somewhat refreshing change of pace (even if it means more pavement miles on the bike than I'm used to).
.
The Arizona Trail east of town with bonus loops around Picture Canyon Preserve and Campbell Mesa were just the ticket for some much needed singletrack as the monsoons started rolling in yesterday.
.
I have been eyeing up a bikepacking route on the Kaibab Plateau, and have some tentative plans to venture up there in the next month or so. As such, I've been slowly piecing together a setup for the new @binarybicycles Molotok, hence the somewhat overkill bag setup for a few hours on the bike. Even with the extra bags, rack, gps, and light it still rides like a dream. Just need to get my new @roguepandadesigns bags in so it doesn't look so mismatched in the frame bag department. 😂

The cleanest this bike will ever be. . Some glamou The cleanest this bike will ever be.
.
Some glamour shots before the first ride on the @binarybicycles Molotok! This build came together beautifully, thanks for all the help sourcing parts and putting it together @thundermountainbikes, it was an enjoyable day of hanging out and piecing together all the shiny bits, on Sunday, and the inaugural ride was AMAZING! I've forgotten how much fun it is to climb on a hardtail, and standing up and hammering on this think feels turbo boost.
.
I also need to re-learn how to descend on a hardtail (and install a @cushcore in the rear tire before I blow it up). All in good time though.
.
For the bike nerds out there, here's the build list (in no particular order):
@srammtb X01 AXS Drivetrain with X01 Carbon DUB crankset
@shimanomtb XTR PD-M9120 XTR Trail Pedals
@srammtb G2 RSC Brake Set
@foxmtb 36 Factory
@deitycomponents Skywire Handlebar with i9 A35 stem
@deitycomponents Supracush Grips
@oneupcomponents EDC Tool Kit
@foxmtb Transfer Dropper Post
@wolf_tooth_comp ReMote Dropper Lever
@wildernesstrailbikes Volt Saddle
@industry_nine Enduro Wheelset
@maxxistires Minion DHF 2.6 (Tan Wall)
@maxxistires Minion DHR II 2.6 (Tan Wall)
.
And yes, I removed the logo on the fork, because that orange wasn't going to fly with the Black/Red theme I had going on here.
.
I'm sure there will be tweaks as I get out more on it, and I need to commission @roguepandadesigns for some bags. Take in the beauty here, that last photo is what it's going to look like moving forward.....dirty.
.
Thanks again to @binarybicycles and the @aztassociation for the frame, and we'll see you all on the trail!

New bike day! . Finally received the frame I had w New bike day!
.
Finally received the frame I had won during a raffle to benefit @aztassociation last fall. This beauty is a custom frame courtesy of @binarybicycles. It's the first titanium frame I've had in over a decade and the first ever custom built frame I've ever had. 29+ compatible, sliding dropouts so I can run it SingleSpeed, full braze-on kit for bikepacking, and a beautiful Arizona Trail head badge (of course!).
.
.
It was so beautiful that I couldn't resist pulling out the camera studio flash setup and taking some really nice shots of it. Headed down to @thundermountainbikes today to build it up and take it for a ride. Plenty more pics to come!
.
.
Thanks again to Matt at the Arizona Trail Association and Jalene and George at Binary Bicycles for hooking me up with this beautiful frame, can't wait to get it built up and out for a ride !

Blood moon. . Pretty cool to have a lunar eclipse Blood moon.

Pretty cool to have a lunar eclipse come across Arizona this evening. The clouds stayed at bay just long enough for me to catch a couple shots of it at full eclipse. They didn't hold off long though, and the third shot was the last thing I saw before it went totally dark.

@sungoldfinch proposed a trip to the Vermilion Cliffs national monument this past weekend for her birthday, so we packed up the camping gear and set out to explore an area that I've driven by a hundred times on my way to other adventures. White Pocket and the surrounding area is filled with unreal landscapes, and the weekend was filled with rock tower climbs, dirt roads, and a healthy dose of relaxing with friends.

Finally going through some spring break photos. These photos do not begin to describe how incredibly vast.....and windy, this place is. It was both amazing and painful to walk around and try and see these huge dunes while getting sandblasted by 30 to 40 mph winds laden with sand.
.
.
In hindsight, we shouldn't have been surprised considering that's how they formed.....

The evening hike. . I've been skinning up snowbowl The evening hike.
.
I've been skinning up snowbowl every winter that I've lived in Flagstaff (as long as there is enough snow). It's always hard work, but sometimes you're rewarded with a beautiful sunset as your heartbeat settles back into a more reasonable rate before the descent.
.
The hikes this year have landed to the far end of the recreation vs workout sliding scale, with bigger crowds, a lack of fresh snow, and the rigid and generally boring course up. I plug in my headphones, push play on the mix of 90s punk and ska and put my head down with the similar mindset of going to the gym.
.
With the Katoola uphill happening this past weekend, the crowds had retreated and the parking lot was generally empty. I had decided to load up my full backcountry pack in preparation for a trip to Canada next week, so I happened to have the full camera gear in tow as well.
.
I crested the last slope to the catwalk turnaround alone. For the first time this year, took in the sunset, snapped some pictures, day down and unplugged for a few extra minutes before ripping the skins off and heading down.

St George for the first part of the holidays. . Ne St George for the first part of the holidays.

Needed a bit of a getaway, and although the skis are packed as well, the bike was the weapon of choice for the first part of the trip. I'm very impressed with the trails here in St George, has a nice mix of flowy singletrack and a heading helping of slickrock.
.
Man I love slickrock.

Aurora in Arizona? . . Not so much. Lots of hype a Aurora in Arizona?
.
.
Not so much. Lots of hype all over the news about a recent solar storm that was estimated to have one of the lowest latitude Aurora viewings in recent history. I figured if there was any sliver of a chance of seeing it anywhere in Arizona, sitting at 9,000 ft on Hart prairie was the most likely possibility.
.
.
I heard that even farther north it was a bit of a bust, but I did get the chance to hang out with the deer who were grazing at 10:00 p.m. and got a couple fun night shots of the sky glow from Williams and some beautiful stars over Humphreys peak. Looks like those tickets to Iceland should stay in the plans.....

More photos from fall break. . . It's no surprise More photos from fall break.

It's no surprise that I gravitate towards the precision, methodical composition and relaxing pace of landscape photography. When it comes to the actual memories made on a trip, those may be the ones that hang on the wall, but it's the people that we share these trips with that tend to stick in the memory banks.
.

Lime Creek, Valley of the Gods, and a random point Lime Creek, Valley of the Gods, and a random point overlooking the San Juan river narrows.
.
.
We left for fall break with an initial destination in mind based on an off hand tip and some scouring of maps to find the right access road. There was a loose plan, but the general goal was to unplug for a little while and just enjoy the wilderness. After a 4wd road down to the San Juan River near Mexican hat, we set up camp and commenced the relaxation.
.
.
The occasional passing river trip were the only humans we saw from camp, although the wild burros across the river were definitely noisy neighbors. Lime Creek ended up being so enjoyable that we just day tripped out from there instead of moving camp. I always favor erring on the side of flexibility when it comes to wandering in the Backcountry.
.
.

Videos are fun and all, but there's just something about a still photo that i am still drawn to. I think a couple of these are going on the wall.

For the last year, it has felt like we've had construction going on on all sides of us. They've been digging up our street, building houses on the street behind us, and now the addition on the back of our house is consuming everything that wasn't under construction. Throughout all of that, somebody parked this excavator on their empty lot and it has sat idle since pre-covid. Makes me wonder if it would even start if they tried.

It's felt like a very busy last month with work ramping up at both jobs and the home addition that we signed up for earlier this year finally taking some big steps forward. We spent the weekend clearing everything out of our bedroom, and the demo took less than a day to get it down to the studs once the crew got in there.

I haven't been getting out as much as I would like, but at least I'm enjoying making creepy photos with the new flash I recently bought.

Count the rings. . . I didn't take the time to act Count the rings.
.
.
I didn't take the time to actually count, got distracted by the view of Kendrick Peak in the background. This was one of many trees that were cut on the Arizona Trail section that goes along the west side of the San Francisco Peaks. It caught me a bit off guard as I'm used to seeing some of the thinning operations, but this was a whole section of forest, with less than 1 in 30 left standing alone in the middle of a clearing. Seemed like an odd place to cut all of the trees, almost felt like the forest was encroaching on the meadow and had to be pushed back.
.
.
I would be interested in some of my more educated friends in the area of forest management giving some insight on the thought process in this area. It's at the east side of Hart Prairie. Please keep it civil.
