The little ripper is skiing everything that's open at snowbowl right now, which has made ski days a lot more fun. And it doesn't hurt that I can go for a mountain bike ride out my back door the same day that I'm on the skis.

The flip side of this mild winter is the looming threat of inevitable summer forest closures and heightened possibility of fires always just under the surface of our thoughts....

I'm good with that. A year ago I had just finished a heli skiing trip and was watching fireworks at Revelstoke resort. What a difference this year.

New addition to the morning is up and running. The Rancilio needed a new boiler top and heating element, a couple new seals and hoses, and some general troubleshooting time on the workbench, but it's running like a champ now.

Last time I was on this trail was SSAZ, circa 2009. This time, I tacked Bug Springs on the front end and enjoyed the luxury of having somebody who was willing to shuttle me up the road.

The hike a bike in the middle is just as fun as I remember it. Although, as the years have passed and the experiences of pushing a bike uphill have piled up, I've grown more accepting that it is just part of the adventure. Especially when this downhill view stretches before you as an inviting reward for the effort.

Took some of my solo travel day back from Fruita to hit one of the last weekends that Ophir pass was likely passable this year. The snow level stayed high enough that I made it to the summit and then parked the taco and did a quick hike up to crystal lake.

.
The wind howled the whole time I was up there, but the ominous clouds held their payload of snow long enough to allow me to snap a few pictures of the cool little alpine lake just a short scree-laden scramble away before heading back down the pass.

We promised the kids an opportunity to go swimming, and a stop on the North shore of Lake Powell seemed like a good opportunity to cut the drive home into pieces while satisfying the urge to get submerged in a lake.
.
.
Unfortunately, the bay we targeted ended up being more of a mud flat with the lake being so low, but we sucked it up and ventured across the mud and eventually were rewarded with some murky swimming time.
.
.
Despite the mediocre water adventures, we ended up with a beautiful campsite surrounded by monoliths for our final night, as we retreated a bit further back from the other groups dotting the shoreline.
.
.
No doubt a worthy adventure, and one that I can only hope will continue to ingrain the importance of these beautiful places in the minds of these adventurous 5-year-olds.

200 miles to home.

Solo road trips have been a part of my repertoire since I started driving. The overall feeling of freedom never changes, the ability to choose my own destiny, even for just a few miles draws me to it.
.
.
I guess 15 years ago I would have just pounded a red bull and kept pushing. Nowadays I stop for a few minutes to enjoy the sunset and make some coffee on the tailgate before the final push across the reservation back home.
.
.
No matter the fuel used to make that last stretch of road back to my own bed, squeezing every drop of of that last day will likely always feel like the right thing to do.

One of the main thoroughfares into the heart of Grand Staircase - Escalante national monument is down a 54 mile long dirt road. We had grand plans to check out some of the interesting areas down this road, but quickly decided to leave that for another trip. The combination of miles upon miles of heinous washboard road surfaces combined with the intense concentration of bad decision making on the part of other visitors diverted our wanderlust to other zones in this region for the following nights.

We did, however, spend our first night of the trip off one of the side roads and experienced a serene campsite with an intense night of crystal clear stargazing that stretched from horizon to horizon.

With fall break for the kiddos being this last weekend, the moms in our school pod decided to head into the canyon for a 3-day backpacking trip. The only logical choice was to load up the munchkins and wander into the desert. Escalante is an area that, although I have been through a couple times, is so vast and remote that I imagine you could spend a lifetime exploring and still find something new every time you venture out.

.
In 4 days of relaxing and exploring the backcountry in this area, it was a different kind of trip. One that led me to explore not only on my feet instead of two wheels, but through the lens of my camera. The amount of time my phone was off airplane mode and had reception was counted in hours, and I shot over 500 pictures with the #z6. Expect more to come....
