Cinematography and Stuff for Sale
I have made a decision. That decision is that I am not a cinematographer. As you know, I bought a ContourHD helmet cam a few months back.
I’ve taken it a lot of places, and taken a lot of video with it, and I’ve come up with a grand total of about 5 minutes of video that I edited together. I just don’t have the time and patience to do video editing. I have a great respect for those who do, but I am not one of them.
On the other hand, Shawn loaned me his nice DSLR camera a couple months back and I use it on almost a daily basis. I took over 1000 pictures in new zealand, several of which I’m going to blow up and frame.
One of these days, Shawn will make good on his promise of taking his camera back, and I will be back to my beat up point and shoot camera.
Therefore, I’m taking preemptive action and doing a small-scale garage clean-out in hopes of getting enough money to pick up a DSLR of my own while not incurring anymore debt. I’m starting to put together a set of things that will be going up on ebay this weekend, but I wanted to give first crack to you, my loyal readers.
ContourHD Helmet Cam
Link This is pretty darn close to new. I’ve got the goggle strap mount and the flat surface mount for it (which I never stuck to anything). I also have an extra battery and a 2gb card that I’ll throw in. I’d like to get what I paid for it, which is $225.
Voodoo Wazoo Cyclocross Frame

Link This is a chromoly 54cm cyclocross frame. It was a demo frame, so it’s got a couple dings in the paint, but it’s all cosmetic. I bought it a couple years ago, and it’s sat in my garage since then. It’s got rack mounts and sliding dropouts. Sorry, no fork. Again, I’d like to get what I paid for it. $200
Chris King/Mavic 819 Singlespeed Wheelset

This is the wheelset which was on my Gunnar. They are Chris King Disc Hubs laced to Mavic 819 tubeless rims with straight gage spokes. They are by far the most bombproof cross country wheels I’ve ever ridden. Yes, they’ve seen some use. Yes, there are a couple dings in them. But, they still hold a tubeless bead no problem, they are very true, and if you buy them, I’ll service and re-pack the bearings with phil’s waterproof grease in them before I send them out. The front wheel has a disc-specific rim on it, and the rear wheel (singlespeed ring drive, baby) has a braking surface on the rim. I’ll sell the set for $425, or if you just want one wheel or the other, make me an offer.
I’ve got some other small parts that I’m pulling together as well, like a carbon FSA seatpost (too much setback so I’m switching back to my american classic titanium), a chris king headset, and some other assorted parts. I’ll throw them up here as I go through the cleanout process.
If you want any of the above shipped to you, let me know and I’ll quote you shipping prices. Alternatively, you can pick it up at pay n take with a 1 beer delivery charge. Leave a comment or shoot me an email if you’re interested in any of it, otherwise it goes up on ebay this sunday.

I just picked up a Canon 20D with a pretty decent zoom lens from my friend who is a pro photographer. I would highly recommend it. The 20D is an older model, so the price has come down considerably, but it’s pretty comparable to the next model up, which is the 30D. If you want to spend a lot of money, you can go up to the 50D, but for the money, pick up a used 20D and invest in some good lenses. They’re more important than the body anyway.
If you want some lens recommendations, I can help you there, too…but I don’t know much of anything about Nikon. I’m a Canon guy.

On the flip side, all of those recommendations are not full frame sensors. Forget the amateur stuff and go for a full frame sensor. that way you can get the most out of any lenses you do buy. (which, as he said, are incredibly vital)
Ideally a 5d mark II or better… but you can get a used 5d mark I for cheap now.

Well, that’s true, a full frame camera is much nicer. But just as a point of reference:
20D used=around $350 for the camera body, and it takes fantastic shots if you know what you’re doing. I can show you examples.
5D used=anywhere from $980 to $1100 used. Also takes fantastic shots.
So if you’ve got the cash, go for the 5D. But if you’re selling stuff from your garage to get a camera, I would go a little cheaper on the body and spend more on the lenses, like I said.

I would love to get a full-frame sensor camera, but as I’m selling some bikes and parts, and not my body on the street (at least not yet) then I’ll probably stick with something a little more in the “mickey mouse amateur shit” category.
And yes, I’m definitely planning on spending a decent amount on lenses, because why would you buy a SLR if you don’t take advantage of the nice lenses and the flexibility in being able to swap them out?
I’ve used nikons for years and am pretty used to them, and even have a couple older lenses that will work with whatever I get, so that’s why I’m sticking with nikon. Six one, half dozen another.
Maybe I’ll just scrap the whole thing and get one of these: Pro Level Shit
It’s the photographer, not the camera, right?
