Crazy 88 Course Info Finalized
Scott and I headed out to find the final keystone to the first loop of the 2009 crazy 88 last night, and finalize we did.
Here’s a little going-away present for all of you, just because that’s the kind of guy I am. The GPX files are up, as are the updated cue sheets. The elevation and mileage is almost exactly the same as last year, but we’ve got more singletrack. Here’s the goods (also posted on the Crazy 88 race page):

Hey Nathan just spent the past two days riding the crazy 88 and have a couple queries. First after riding over from Bismark on the AZT and bushwhacking down to the camping area are you having people climb back up to aspen corner or is there another route back to the road other than gimpys heart and gimpys gully?(which by the way is across snow bowl road from the power line trail)Second after riding over Newham/new secret are we crossing weatherford road and continuing up to orion springs via new secret and then all the way down to shultz or riding down weatherford road? Might be that it doesn’t matter all that much but I am curious. Cheers have a great time across the pond. Keri

Very good questions.
After you bushwack down to the campsite, there is a doubletrack that comes out of the campsite, and you make an immediate hairpin turn to the left on the doubletrack. After another 1/4 mile or so, there is some singletrack that crosses the doubletrack you’re on. This is part of the “sherlock” trail (also called “Mace’s revenge” by the moto guys). Take a left on that and that trail takes you out to snowbowl road and dumps you at mile marker 4, where you cross the road and go up to the powerline on some singletrack. I thought all the stuff on the same side as the powerlines was called gimpy’s gully, but maybe I have the names mixed up.
The plan for newham/new secret is to basically jump on that trail all the way down to schultz, not taking weatherford road.
Hope that helps!
p.s. also just noticed that the mileage is a bit off on the cue sheet, as the distance between the hairpin turn and the turn to sherlock is 0.0 miles, which is definitely wrong. I’ll have to look at that when I get a chance, not sure if I’ll have time before I leave.

Thanks Nathan that helps a lot! Now I know just where you’re talking about. Although I thought the single track up to mile marker 4 was gimpys gully and gimpys heart! Who knows what folks call what:)At any rate that’s a little tougher climb than just going up to Aspen corner and I’ll be sad to miss out on bombing down flying fish to viet springs but oh well! Glad it’s routed for all single track back to shultz and not the road. Later K

The climb is a little tougher, but it’s not as bad as you think if you’ve never ridden it from that direction. Where we cut into it is pretty much the highest point on that trail, so you cut out the initial climb up from 151, and go straight into a rippin fun downhill followed by some grin-inducing technical, fun singletrack, and then a short climb back up to the road. Believe me, you’ll be grinning from ear to ear on that section. so good……

i hear ya! i’ve ridden it many times coming down from snowbowl and have always thought it would be fun to ride the other way, just that last push up to the road and then up to powerline……uugh! One last note…..the second loop is tough! kicked our butts today even with some cloud cover! got home around noon and saw that it was 90 deg. Where have the rains gone to!
