The Big Dummy Shortage of 2008
With the “economic stimulus checks”:http://www.irs.gov/irs/article/0,,id=177937,00.html right around the corner, and my birthday in less than a month, I decided that an early birthday present was in order.
So, on monday I marched into AZ Bikes with a build list of components which began with “18 inch Surly Big Dummy Frameset”:http://www.surlybikes.com/bigdummy.html. On tuesday I got a call from Adam asking to stop by and clarify a couple of the components because he was putting in the order. I stopped by, and we started punching numbers into the “QBP”:http://www.qbp.com/ website for the components I was looking for.
That was when crisis hit. Quality was out of every Big Dummy frameset excepting only the 16″.
I sent an email to Surly today, which Emily kindly (and quickly) responded to:
Hi Nathan,
You’re right, we’re all out. We’ve got 16″ frames in stock but that’s it. The other sizes will be here in August. It stinks. I hope you can wait. Please do let us know if you have any other questions.
Thanks!
Emily

OH NO!
I, in fact, could not wait. As you may have guessed, even though I haven’t been verbalizing my desire beyond the initial “post a month ago”:http://www.handlebarsandwich.com/04/01/2008/thinking-about-a-big-dummy/, the idea had been rattling around in my brain since that day.
I frantically spent my lunch hour calling different online shops looking for a frame. Everyone had the same story. The 16″ frame was the only one to be found (and some places were even out of that).
Finally, I struck gold. A little shop by the name of “bikeman.com”:http://www.bikeman.com/ came through. I called them up and somebody actually ran around looking at boxes making absolutely sure they had a frame in an 18. I pulled out my credit card and bought what could have possibly been one of the last 18″ Big Dummy frames for sale until august.
I’m incredibly excited about the prospect of the frame arriving sometime next week. We got the remainder of the parts ordered from AZ Bikes today, so it all should be coming together the beginning of next week.
Stay tuned. . . .

I think bikeman bought a bunch of my old bikes a couple years ago… they must really have their finger on the pulse of the cycling world

Go Bikeman.
They are the ones who went in the basement and found a 2007 Kona Paddy Wagon to replace my destroyed one. Everyone else told me I would have to get a 2008 in this puky gray color.

A Big Dummy isn’t the only option if you want an Xtracycle. The Big Dummy happens to be the coolest option, but not the only one. Last year I took my 20 year old Specialized Rockhopper, stripped it down, had it powdercoated, bought a FreeRadical conversion kit from Xtracycle, ordered new components and built one of the coolest Xtracycles around. The best part is I recycled an old bike and gave it a new life. So don’t think the Big Dummy is the only way to go.
I bought my Lake MXZ301 winter boots from Bikeman a few years ago. They had the lowest price of anyone.

Steve and Dara – Definitely seemed like cool folks at bikeman.com, I’ve gotten a couple other little hard-to-find items from them in the past, but it’s been a while.
Doug – I do like the idea of the freeradical kit, and would definitely consider going that way also. Much cheaper, advantage of a recycled frame, and the option to take it off if you ever wanted to. I have, however, heard some people who have complained that the setup feels very flexy with any decent amount of weight (100+ lbs) on it, and you have to be very meticulous about tightening it up fairly often. Have you had that experience as well?

I sure it is more flexy than the Big Dummy. It still easily handles frequent loads of 50 -100 lbs. And thanks for the reminder. I need to do a check of the all the nuts and bolts.
I noticed the kickstand is loosening up. I was going to go over everything this weekend. When I built it up I torqued everything down to the recommended torque values. To paraphrase the Xtracycle owner’s manual, “If it’s not installed properly, you could die and it’s not the folks at Xtracycles fault”.
