Granny Gear tries “Funny”, Still Requires Firstborn for Race Entry Fee
I just caught this little gem over at the Dirt Rag Blog:
“Granny Goes Galactic”:http://www.dirtragmag.com/blogarific/granny-goes-galactic/
I’m somewhat intrigued to see the organizers of the Granny Gear 24 hour series trying to be funny with their press releases. Maybe they took all those $350 entry fees that they extracted from all the solo participants via their rear ends and paid a comic to write their press release.
How can epic rides put on an event for $120/person, 24 hours in the sage put on an event for $90/person, the AZ Endurance series races do it for free, yet granny just unveiled their new pricing scheme which settles them in at a comfortable “$310 per race”:http://grannygear.com/Register/price_table.php?class_select=solo_price_scale&year=2008 if you register 6 months early?
I would love to ride 24 hours of moab, but damn, I can ride 3 other 24 hour races for that price.
Then again, I guess they’re competing with the “24 hours of adrenaline”:https://www.24hoursofadrenalin.com whos fees range from a ‘bargain’ $290 to a whopping $375 for solo categories.
It’s a little bit out of control.

Damn. There better be free beer and strippers at those prices…

then again, you could just buy an entry to old pueblo, and still have enough left over for beer and strippers. can’t imagine the beer and strippers are all that good in utah anyways. . . . .

That is why I support Vic’s Team Bigfoot events (www.teambigfoot.net) in Nor Cal. Oregon’s only endurance race is $246. I am working at fixing that…

Those look like some cool events for sure, very low key, but what looks like some really fun events. Very ‘pre-commercialized’ feel to it. I like the handmade prizes.

i did the 24 hour race at Moab a few years ago and boyitellyouwhat, it’s hard to understand why it costs over $300. there is no aide, food, etc. you get to camp in a dust bowl of cow burned desert choked with tumble weeds.
i’ve never helped organize a race so i can not appreciate how hard it must be get all the crap together, obtain permits, insurance, HR, marketing, and database stuff. i suppose they’re just trying to make it their full time job and earn a living at it.
interesting how the biggest, most expensive races seem to attract an element i find less desirable too.
all praise clandestine bicycles races – where the price is right!!

I agree, the bigger races seem to attract the bigger a-holes. Same reason I stopped riding most XC races.
