Catchin Up
Don’t really know what I’m catchin’ up to. But I do know that the last couple weeks, I’ve had about 100 things to post, and haven’t gotten around to any of them.
Probably won’t make it tonight either, but at least I’ll get a few out of the way.
Lots of skiing happening lately. I’m hoping it counts as cross-training. Especially since the swizzle and the APC are back-to-back this year, and I haven’t been on a mountain bike since I put it though my back window. Gonna rebuild the fork tonight and get down to sedona some evening with the new light setup.
That’s right, a new set of night riding apparatus courtesy of a deal with Princeton Tec. I actually got 2 switchback 3s from them. I wanted one with an extra battery, but I got a deal on the lights and not on the batteries, so 2 lights it was. Can’t wait to get down there. I’ll be the guy who appears to be toting a generator and a worksite light along on his bike.
I’m pretty psyched to have my own sweet setup this year for old pueblo also. Turns out that the BTI guys found a 4th, so I promptly registered the duo of Mancandy-HandlebarSandwich for the epic 24 hour event. Ben and I will be rockin’ the singlespeeds in the duo category against none other than the likes of FKR and Raney (and whomever else is registered already, but that’s not important).
Speaking of registrations, the SSWC09 roster is starting to fill out. There are a shit-ton of flagstaff names on there already, which promises to be a good time all around. Can’t wait.
It’s been a few weeks of some awesome skiing lately, that’s for sure. New years day was a trip with tRoy, J-money, and a few other folks up to humphreys and down dunham canyon (a.k.a. the cheshire hourglass). tRoy had a little write up over at his site already, but I wanted to throw down a couple of the choice pictures here as well.
This was the line. Big snowfield to little choke, to big snowfield below.

Kinda like an hourglass, get it?
the choke, up close and personal. Note: this picture doesn’t do it justice, it’s about a 50 degree slope through that section.

rippin’ big turns below the rock face, just how I like it.

the hike out of humphrey’s cirque

There have been a few more backcountry days as well, and I think the total number of days on the skis for this season is around 15 now. Not bad for halfway through january.
Also made it up to silverton this last weekend with the red-headed stepchild, j-money, and rocco. We had a couple good days of finding powder stashes in the trees and chilling out in the lazy town of silverton.
And by lazy, I mean pretty damn empty.
Josh got this pretty sweet picture of me hucking off one of the cornices at the top of the waterfall run. Click through for the rest of the story, I swear, it’s worth it (might take a minute to load if you’ve got a slow connection).
Unfortunately, my skis didn’t hold up too well over the last couple weeks of shredding. If there is anyone out there who had really keen eyes, you would have noticed that I wasn’t on my normal set of skis (a set of Havocs which are more than a few years old). That’s because the weekend I skiied Taos with Raney, I did this little number.
Brock did his best to patch it back together for me, but it lasted through about one run in silverton, and I was back on the rental verdicts.
My new skis are on their way from Avon, Colorado courtesy of the fine gents at Liberty Skis. I wanted to buy from somebody who made their skis here in the US, and was doing something a little off the beaten path. Liberty fit that bill, and Chris was super-stoked on getting some skis out to me real quick. And by quick, I mean the Hazmat 181s I ordered yesterday will be here thursday. How’s that for quick?
The new NTN bindings are sitting on my dining room table, and once the boots are off backorder with Scarpa, I’ll be ready to rock and roll.
Oh happy day. Can’t wait.
And on that note, I’m out. I got an early morning date with the rollers, ugh.

Good on the new skis. You can use them on some early spring, sun-softened snow in the springslide chutes, then we can head over for some powder on the N. shots of core ridge. Depart Saturday AM. Call for details.

I keep telling myself that I need to ride more in preparation for my big weekend, and then you come along and say something like that. You are a cruel, cruel man tRoy. But yes, if I can get some boots, I am most likely in.
